PLEASE READ THROUGH ALL OF
THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING TO
INSTALL
Please note that these
instructions refer to the magnetic
sensor using a reed switch - not to
the magnetic proximity sensor
- The CAI speed sensor
kit consists of the speed
sensor itself and 6 magnets.
The installer needs to
provide a suitable mounting
bracket and a high quality 2
pack epoxy adhesive, with a
cure time of around 24 hours.
- The principle of operation of
the sensor is that it
generates an electronic pulse
each time a magnetic passes
the sensor probe, and
transmits that pulse to the
electronic speedo.
- The first task therefore is
to fix the magnets in the
desired location, which may
be directly onto the prop
shaft, onto the half shaft or
onto the inner surface of the
vehicles wheel. Wherever the
location, the surface to
which the magnet will be
fixed must be clean and free
from any contamination. The
magnets can then be adhered
to the desired location using
the epoxy adhesive, and left
to set for the time
recommended by the adhesive
manufacturer (CAI strongly
recommends the use of an
adhesive with a minimum cure
time of 24 hours). The
magnets should be
equidistantly spaced around
the rotating shaft or wheel.
For prop shaft and half shaft
application 3 or 4 magnets is
recommended, for a wheel
based application up to 6
magnets may be used, to
increase the number of pulses
per revolution.
- The sensor can then be
positioned as close as
possible to the magnets,
using a suitable bracket for
the particular installation.
N.B.
It is vitally important that
the sensor is mounted
directly opposite the magnets
as they pass its probe, any
offset will result in an
unsatisfactory signal. A gap
of up to 1/8 inch (3 millimetres), between the
probe and the magnet can be
tolerated by the sensor, but
the smaller the gap the
better the signal.
- The electrical connections to
the sensor should be made as
follows:-
One wire should be
connected to a switched
positive supply, i.e. power
should be off to the sensor
when the ignition is off.
The second wire should be
connected to the black and
white wire on the harness
supplied with the
speedometer.
- The CAI sensor can
easily be tested for quality
of signal, without the aid of
special meters by connecting
one wire to a positive supply
and the other wire to a 12v
bulb, which has an
earth/ground connection. The
bulb should illuminate if the
sensor is working properly.
- For instructions on
calibrating and installing
your speedometer to match the
signal being generated by the
sensor please see the
