Hello

SMITHS Mini Gauges at International Mini Meeting

The classic Mini featured SMITHS instrumentation in the dashboard since the first car rolled off the production line in 1959.  At the International Mini Meeting (8th – 12th August 2019, Bristol, UK), SMITHS celebrate their 60-year association with the world’s favourite small car.

The International Mini Meeting (IMM) only visits the UK every 5 years.  The event originated in Germany in 1978 when it started as a small 3-day camp event on the Whitsun weekend.  After several years the event’s popularity grew, extending across German borders, and resulting in an international event which takes place every year in a different country.  Every 5 years the celebration returns to UK, the birthplace of the Mini.

This year the IMM is held at Washingpool Farm, Easter Compton, Bristol and celebrates 60 years of the Mini.  This includes a huge birthday party on Sunday 11th August.

Mini History

Over 60 years, the Mini has gained a reputation as the most popular small car in the world.  Past owners include Steve McQueen, The Beatles, and even Enzo Ferrari.  In the 1960s, the Mini was as much a fashion icon as the mini skirt.

At the same time, a high performance Mini became a rallying legend.  The Mini Cooper, designed by John Cooper, took on and beat the world’s best rally cars.  The classic Mini Cooper S is still one of the most favourite Minis with enthusiasts across the world.

SMITHS and Somerford Mini Ltd

Somerford Mini Ltd is a long-standing distributor of SMITHS instruments and one of the main sponsors of IMM 2019.  On their stand, Mini enthusiasts will see a range of classic SMITHS gauges for the Mini.  Technicians from Caerbont Automotive Instruments (CAI), the UK manufacturer of SMITHS gauges, will be available to discuss installation or operational issues.

SMITHS Mini Instruments

CAI has an extensive range of SMITHS gauges for the classic Mini.  This includes modern digital OLED versions of the classic black and magnolia faced speedometers, bringing the technology up-to-date without losing the character and look of the original instrumentation.  Mechanical versions are also available.
