Automotive Sector Success for UK Manufacturing
The Automotive sector continues to lead the way for UK manufacturing in 2016, as reported by SMMT. Following 5 years of continued growth, new car registrations reached record levels with 2,692,786 registered in 2016. In the first 11 months of 2016, UK car production grew by 9.6%, reaching the highest level of output since 1999.

Despite the political and economic concerns relating to Brexit and other global events, the UK Automotive sector remains in a strong position to maintain growth in 2017.
As a UK manufacturer and supplier of specialist gauges and instrumentation for cars and motorcycles, we have seen an increase in demand both in the UK and overseas. We have worked on some fantastic projects in 2016 including designing and manufacturing the gauges for the new Caterham Harrods Seven. Indeed, the manufacture of special, high performance sports and super cars is one of the UK Automotive sectors growing strengths. Subsequently, we have also supplied the gauges for the Noble M600 Supercar and the 80th Anniversary Morgan 4/4. It is great to be able to work closely with the UK car manufacturers. Our design engineers in the UK get to understand and appreciate the unique look and feel of the car and produce gauges and instruments to reflect that car's character.
The overseas demand for UK-made cars continues to drive the growth and, between January and November, exports were 11% higher than the same period in 2015. The export demand for specialist gauges is also growing and in 2016 we appointed new distributors in countries all over the world. In 2017, we intend to further bolster our distribution network. This will enable us to provide local support to the tens of thousands of motor and motorcycle enthusiasts who want to use CAI or classic Smiths gauges. It is great to be able to support this passionate group of Classic Car and Motorcycle owners.
In 2017 there will be challenges, but the UK Automotive sector is well-positioned to continue the growth. At CAI and Smiths, we are excited by the opportunities that lie ahead.
